Gratitude

by Paul R Smith on September 9, 2011

For those of us who grew up without, lost or had an unavailable father it’s easy to fall into the trap of a self-pity party. I often day dream what my life might look like today if I had the affirmation, encouragement and direction of my earthly dad growing up. I think things like…dang, if my dad was around to discern what my strength’s and talents were at a young age he could have pointed me in the right direction and helped me make better decisions. I could have been this or done that and my life would be so much better.

I heard a saying- “live life on life’s terms”. In other words I don’t have control of what happens to me in a lot of ways. I didn’t choose my family of origin, I didn’t choose to be abandoned by my dad and his inability to shake his alcoholism. The terms of my life happened the way they did and that is just life.

So, I’m faced with a choice, do I live in the emptiness of self pity and disappointment or do I lift my head up and look at all that I do have? Gratitude is the very thing that will fill me up with the goodness all around me that my heavenly Father has given me. If I am wallowing in what I don’t have I miss the gifts He has poured out all over me. I was reminded today that it is vital that I live my life with a thankful heart on a daily basis. God has provided things and people for me to be thankful for and I NEED to not miss that.

When my daughter was younger she would get in these fits of wining and complaining. We started to do what we called a “thankful list”. We would take turns naming 10 things we were thankful for. It was an effective way to switch her perspective to the blessings instead of the dissappointments. Here is my thankful list for today. I encourage you to share your’s here or with a friend or loved one.

I am thankful…

1. That God loves me unconditionally

2. For my wife and daughter

3. For the great ministry I get to be a part of

4. That I have a house, a car and food to eat

5. For my dog

6. For good relationships with my siblings

7. That I get to create art

8. For God’s word

9. That I am healthy

10. For coffee!

What are you thankful for?

A year later…

by Paul R Smith on July 8, 2011

So I haven’t written a blog post for over a year and I could give you all kinds of excuses but I won’t. The truth is that I have a problem with following through on things. I get excited about projects, work hard and then let it go… I forgot how therapeutic it was for me to write about my life growing up without a dad and how my heavenly Father helps me to truly grow up.

Yea, grow up… that’s a hard one. It’s especially difficult to realize that while I’ve aged, I am becoming more aware of my maturity deficit. Taking responsibility is work and I have somehow bought into the idea that life should be easy… and fun and all about me and and…

Reality does bite and it hurts too. Sometimes I feel like a little kid trying to be a grown up. Honestly this has been a really hard year in a lot of areas but I’m thankful that my Father doesn’t give up on me and He pursues me until I’ll listen. Now that He has my attention He is able to work in my life in a way that is best for me. That’s ultimately what He wants… me to have His best and to glorify Him with my life. However, in order to get there requires the hard soul wrenching work to weed out all the junk and replace it with character. I may look okay on the outside but He knows where I need attention and we’ll collaborate to get to the real me, the person He made me to be.

All this to say… I’m back and I hope to write some posts here and there. Your turn- Where have you been the last year?

What is your new name? Your true name?

“Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches. To everyone who is victorious I will give some of the manna that has been hidden away in heaven. And I will give to each one a white stone, and on the stone will be engraved [...]

The Way That You Father Me

May 13, 2010

I recently came across a song that really ministers to me. I want to share it with you because it’s full of truth that I know we all need to hear often. The artist is Eoghan Heaslip who I’ve never heard of but He absolutely got this one right! Truly an encouraging and inspired [...]

Initiation into manhood

May 5, 2010

I had the rare opportunity to attend a Knighting Ceremony a couple Sunday afternoons ago. My friend Scott wanted to affirm his 13 year old son into the fellowship of men. The goal of the day was to communicate to him that he is now transitioning from boy to man. Scott invited a good [...]

Insecurity hides and I know that I have done my share… (Affirmation Pt. 1)

April 16, 2010

What is it about affirmation? Why do we need it so much? It seems that where there is no affirmation, there is insecurity. What is it in us that craves it and looks for it in relationships everywhere we go? To be affirmed is to be told or even believe that; you’re [...]

I’ll never sing for an audience!

April 9, 2010

Imagine a sixteen year old in the mid 80’s with Van Halen posters plastered on his bedroom walls, singing at the top of his lungs. You laugh, but I know I’m not the only one who day dreamed about being a rock star. Fast forward to college… still love my music and still a closet [...]

Baseball and Blessings

March 23, 2010

As spring comes along it often reminds me of baseball. Baseball was a huge part of my life as a kid and I didn’t miss a season. When I started high school I made it onto the freshman baseball team. It was a little scary joining high school sports. The varsity [...]

Are we becoming a world of judges?

March 10, 2010

I have to admit that I watch American Idol. I’m also a performer and am entertained by stories of the individuals, the undiscovered talent, the music and of course the judging. In my opinion, reality TV in general has provided ample opportunity for us to be judges. We have opinions about the participant’s [...]
